Today’s Weekly Dose is full winter mode: The Fat Bike Birkie is almost here, racers are pedaling into the clouds at Mt. Washington, dog owners are beefing with groomers, and someone decided 32-inch wheels should be a thing which could be good for fat-bike part availability. We’ve also got a fresh batch of gear picks, a mixed ski/snowshoe/fatbike sufferfest, and an e-fatbike that promises car-killing range. Toss in a little trail etiquette drama and some Upper Peninsula race stoke, and you’ve got plenty to read while your boots dry.

“It’s a public trail, not your pup’s private potty spot”
Anchorage letter reminds everyone that snow trails aren’t dog parks.
A recent Anchorage Daily News letter calls out off-leash dogs and poop on a multi‑use winter trail, echoing what a lot of fat‑bike trail crews quietly grumble about all season long. It’s a good reminder to keep dogs under control, pack out the poop, and respect groomed lanes so the access battles tilt in our favor instead of against bikes.

Singular Albatross 32er: can 32-inch wheels save some fat-bike bits?
Long‑legged 32er MTB pokes at old fat-bike standards.
Take a look at the Singular Albatross, a 32‑inch‑wheeled mountain bike that just might keep certain fat‑bike components (like hubs and crank setups) in circulation a little longer. It’s not a fatbike, but it’s a reminder that weird wheel sizes can sometimes give old standards a second life instead of sending everything to the parts bin graveyard.

Last call to obsess over weather forecasts and tire choices.
This Saturday’s Fat Bike Birkie offers 47K, 21K, and 10K options on groomed Birkie Trail, plus expo vibes and full “Birkie Fever” in Cable. Trails are looking fast and firm right now, but you know how quickly that can change. Bring your tire pressure gauge and maybe two sets of tires.

Ski, Shoe & Fatbike to the Clouds – Great Glen / Mt. Washington, NH – just wrapped
Bookmark this one for 2027 if you like suffering uphill.

Highlands Fat Bike Series Recap – Herrington Manor, Oakland, MD
Fun race vibes for all skill levels in the Mid-Atlantic.
The Highlands Fat Bike Series stop at Herrington Manor State Park offered multiple laps of mixed XC and singletrack, with organizers calling it a “fun race for all skill levels” from beginner to advanced. East-coasters who think fat-biking is just a Great Lakes thing should probably add this to the calendar next time around.
Plus there is still the upcoming stop March 8, 2026 in White Grass, WV

Mid Week Fat Bike Series – Park City, UT – Race #4 cancelled for lack of snow
When winter forgets to show up.
Bike Utah’s Mid Week Fat Bike Series had to cancel Race #4 on February 24 due to thin or non-existent snow, a trend we’re hearing more and more this season. If you’re in the Intermountain West, this is your reminder to enjoy whatever snow is left and be ready for shoulder-season conditions sooner than usual.

Michigan Fat Bike Challenge – S8 Finale incoming
Series bye week over, finale on deck.
The final segment of this year’s Fat Bike Challenge, S8, heads to Kensington on the west side for a finale that mixes big views, wind, punchy climbs, and fast descents. Because trail conditions are too inconsistent to keep everyone on dirt, this week’s challenge moves to pavement, with one notable twist: drafting is allowed, but only with other current FBC riders and still on fat bikes.

E-Fatbike News (26" wheels only)
Class 1 e-fatbikes officially allowed at Fat Bike Birkie (but no podiums)
You can ride assist, but you can’t take the win.
Event rules confirm that Class 1 fat e-bikes are welcome at Fat Bike Birkie, but riders on assist won’t be listed in official results or eligible for awards. It’s a nice compromise that keeps the event open to more riders while protecting traditional race categories.

E‑bike and fat‑tire trends for 2026 (rack edition)
Are heavier bikes giving your current bike rack fits?
A recent industry piece highlights how heavier e‑bikes and fat‑tire rigs are driving new car‑rack designs with higher weight ratings, better cradles, and e‑bike‑specific features. If your current rack whimpers every time you load a 26‑inch e‑fatbike, this is your sign to start researching beefier options before summer road‑trip season.
